British League Men Triumph Through Torrential Weather
On Sunday the Men’s first team battled
through really difficult wet conditions to start the 2009 season where
it left off in 2008, with a thumping win in the British League
Premiership in Sheffield. Beagles 376 points was a club record and we
won by nearly 90 points.
While some of the other teams were
clearly struggling to get their people out we had a couple of the guys
making a really big effort. Louis Dale and Nelson Oboh both made the
journey from the Southern League match at Swindon to Sheffield by
train. Louis doubled up in the 800m and 1500m and was rewarded with
1.55.60 in the 800m, his best time for some years.
Nelson had a remarkable afternoon. He
filled in in the B pole vault, then set a new pb in the Triple Jump and equaled his pb in the high jump where his 1.95m was good enough for 2nd place in a rain- affected competition. He rounded off his day with 3rd leg in the 4x400m. Well done – a great performance for the team.
We won 10 of the 19 A strings and our performances were excellent in the conditions. 100m, 200m and 4x100m Mark Findlay won the lot (with Gianni Frankis, Bruce Tasker and Harvey Byrne in the relay). 400m Rabah Yusef and Andre Fernandez win A and B strings. 800m Robbie Schofield sprinted home first in 1.51.23. 3000m Steeplechase Sam Farah dominant run wins in 9.08.02. 110m Hurdles another double with Gianni Frankis and Alex Al -Ameen winning their races Discus Abdul Buhari wins in horrible conditions with 54.99m Javelin Chris Hughff’s 70.97m wins by 9m! Shot Kieren Kelly and Jamie Stevenson both win by a long way
As well as the event winners we had
lots of seconds and thirds. There were some very encouraging runs from
Steve and Dave Green in the 400m Hurdles, some better form from Simon
Bown in the Hammer (where Amir Williamson also made a welcome return
after injury) and a rare long jump from Suote Nyonanyo. The next match
is at the beginning of July in Manchester. Beagles have never finished
higher than third in Manchester. So this will be a big test for us. - Report by Tony Shiret, BL Team Manager
