CLUB UPDATE - Into Summer

The club’s The club’s Monday and Wednesday evening training sessions have been running since early Aprill and we are now running all sessions (including the Foundation Group) except Sunday Academy sessions which we hope to resume soon. Thanks to our coaches and administrators for successfully implementing this. Since 19 th July most remaining COVID restrictions have been removed under Step 4 of the UK Government’s roadmap. We have agreed an updated contract with the stadium management company LS185 which has allowed re-opening of the spectator stand and access to indoor areas including the changing rooms (3 persons max per changing room for now).

Anyone with COVID symptoms or self-isolating will not be admitted to the track and self-declaration forms will still need to be completed.

We have had extra lines painted on the track to allow all races (except steeplechase) to finish at the current 200m start position on the back straight. The reason for this is that the wind at Stratford is normally against in the home straight and the new lines help us hold races with following wind in either direction. In parts of the track there are quite a lot of lines now. But our aim is to increase participation in races as well as training and we think this helps.

In our first Open Meeting of the year on 13th June we saw some top-level sprinting with four track records. Our track is very fast and after the event 11 of the top 36 Men’s 100m times on Power of 10 were achieved on this one day on our track, with a slightly lower number in the Women’s rankings.

We also held our first evening Open Meeting on 30th June which also featured top level Wheelchair performances from Rich Chiassaro a member of the UK World Class Performance programme and former world medallist. Congratulations to Rich on his selection for the Tokyo Paralympics.

We have one further Open Meeting planned on Sunday 12th September. Entry details are available on the Entry4Sporst website. Our 15th August meeting has been cancelled because of maintenance work on the infield.

Summer team fixtures are available to see Summer Fixtures. This Summer League events are being held with reduced programmes and on a more localised basis. There is no promotion and relegation. Because of the many commitments on our athletes the club is fielding teams in all events. But we are not trying to be competitive this Summer. That will come when the pandemic is behind us.

We would like to congratulate Asha Phillip and Nathaneel Mitchell-Blake on their selections for the Tokyo Olympics and wish them both every success. Similarly Jonathan Broom-Edwards has been selected in the High Jump for the Paralympic Games.

Aleeya Sibbons and Sam Callaway competed the GB U20 team for the European Championships inTallin. In the Euro U23s England Champion heptathlete Jade O’Dowda competed for GB.
